Background of the Study (400 words)
Human trafficking is a global issue that involves the exploitation of individuals for forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse. Victims of human trafficking often experience severe physical, emotional, and psychological trauma. The psychological impact of human trafficking is profound, with many victims developing long-term mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance abuse (Tijani & Adebayo, 2023). The effects of trafficking extend far beyond the physical abuse endured by victims, often causing long-lasting psychological scars that affect their ability to function and reintegrate into society.
Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has been severely affected by human trafficking, especially given the ongoing conflict and displacement caused by insurgent activities. Many individuals, particularly women and children, fall victim to traffickers who exploit their vulnerabilities. Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri provides critical mental health services to individuals affected by trauma, including victims of human trafficking. However, research focusing on the specific psychological impact of human trafficking on victims in the region is limited.
The study will explore the psychological consequences of human trafficking on victims receiving care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri. By focusing on the psychological impacts experienced by trafficking survivors, the study will shed light on their mental health needs and inform interventions to support their recovery and reintegration into society. This research is vital in raising awareness about the psychological impact of human trafficking in Nigeria and ensuring that victims receive comprehensive mental health care.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Human trafficking is a serious human rights violation that leaves lasting psychological consequences for its victims. The psychological impact of trafficking is often overlooked, as attention is typically focused on the physical abuse and exploitation victims endure. However, mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety are commonly reported among trafficking survivors, which severely hinder their ability to heal and reintegrate into society. Victims of human trafficking often face stigma, isolation, and a lack of appropriate mental health care, which exacerbates their psychological distress.
Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri, provides specialized care for individuals affected by various forms of trauma, including human trafficking. However, there is insufficient research examining the specific psychological impact of human trafficking on victims seeking care at the hospital. Understanding the mental health needs of trafficking survivors is critical for providing effective treatment and support services. Moreover, such research can help inform policy development and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing the long-term psychological effects of trafficking.
This study aims to investigate the psychological impact of human trafficking on victims receiving care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri. By examining the mental health issues faced by these victims, the study will contribute to improving the care provided to trafficking survivors and raise awareness about the mental health needs of this vulnerable population.
